How to Tell If a Rug Is Hand Knotted or Machine Made — 5 Simple Tests
Walk into any rug store and you'll hear the same claim over and over: "This is a handmade rug." But is it really?
The truth is, machine-made rugs are designed to look handmade. And unless you know what to look for, it can be very difficult to tell the difference.
Here are 5 simple tests you can do — no expertise required.
Why Does It Matter?
A genuine hand knotted rug and a machine-made rug are completely different products.
A hand knotted rug is made one knot at a time by a skilled weaver. It can take months or even years to complete. It is made from natural wool and will last for generations.
A machine-made rug is produced in a factory in a matter of hours. It is typically made from synthetic fibers and will show wear within a few years.
The price difference is significant — and so is the quality. Knowing how to tell them apart protects you as a buyer.
Test 1 — Look at the Back of the Rug
This is the most reliable test.
Turn the rug over and look at the back. On a genuine hand knotted rug, the pattern on the back should be almost as clear and detailed as the pattern on the front. You should be able to see individual knots.
On a machine-made rug, the back is usually covered with a latex or fabric backing that hides the construction. The pattern on the back will be blurry or invisible.
No backing, clear pattern on the back = hand knotted.
Latex or fabric backing, blurry pattern = machine made.
Test 2 — Check the Fringes
Look at the fringes — the threads
